What causes neck pain?

Neck pain typically starts within your seven cervical vertebrae, or in the discs, nerves, and other soft tissues in your upper spine.

Your pain may be either acute or chronic.

Acute neck pain

Acute neck pain lasts for a few days, or up to a few weeks. Usually, acute neck pain starts suddenly and as the result of auto accident injuries like whiplash or sports injuries like muscle strain. But, acute neck pain can also start with other kinds of accidents or injuries.

Chronic neck pain

Chronic neck pain continues for longer than 12 weeks. The most common cause of chronic neck pain is cervical spondylosis, a family of conditions involving cervical spine degeneration. A few of the many conditions included in cervical spondylosis can include stenosis (spinal canal narrowing), disc herniation, disc degeneration, and osteoarthritis.

Untreated acute neck pain may lead to chronic neck pain in time.

When do I need treatment for neck pain?

If your neck pain is quite serious and disrupts your life, you need to seek treatment. When your neck pain also causes stiffness and poor range of motion, it can be particularly intrusive and therefore requires treatment sooner instead of later.

What are the treatment options for neck pain?

Healing Rehab Physical Therapy SC uses holistic methods to treat neck pain from a whole-body wellness perspective. The holistic approach identifies the root cause of neck pain and associated issues like stiffness.

Then, the team uses noninvasive scientifically proven methods to heal the damaged tissue that caused your neck pain. After healing the underlying damage, your pain goes away for good.

Some of the many different holistic treatment methods for neck pain are:

  • Therapeutic exercises (physical therapy)
  • Cold and heat therapy
  • Cold laser therapy
  • Therapeutic massage
  • Electrotherapy
  • Myofascial release
  • Anodyne® therapy
  • Ultrasound therapy
  • Dry needling

The team can design a customized neck pain recovery plan for you. In most cases, you’ll have appointments at least several times a week to achieve immediate pain relief. At the same time, you’ll do home exercises to help with strength, range of motion, and flexibility as you recover.

The team can also help you take the right steps to prevent neck pain in the future, from changing your sleeping position to altering the way you work on a computer.
